I recently came across an interesting diplomatic news story. South Korean President Lee Jae-myung visited Singapore in early October and held talks with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. The leaders of both countries agreed to initiate negotiations to upgrade the free trade agreement and strengthen cooperation in defense, advanced technology, and combating cyber fraud.
What’s particularly noteworthy are the five Memoranda of Understanding they signed. The cooperation focuses on several hot areas, including sharing AI policies in public safety, exploring AI technology applications in intellectual property, and collaborating on quantum, space, and satellite technologies. It seems that both Lee Hsien Loong and President Lee have made AI and cutting-edge technology strategic priorities.
During the visit, President Lee also met with Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and attended a state banquet. Additionally, he participated in the AI Connect Summit jointly hosted by the two countries. The summit’s organization is quite symbolic, indicating the importance both nations place on cooperation in the AI field.
Overall, Korea and Singapore, while strengthening economic and trade ties, are increasingly focusing on technological innovation and security cooperation. Especially in AI and cybersecurity, both countries clearly share common concerns. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s role in promoting these collaborations is also quite evident. This pragmatic cooperation framework benefits both countries.
