Hungarian Tisza Party leader Péter Magyar said on the 20th that the soon-to-be formed Hungarian new government will work to push for the thawing of frozen EU funds within a shorter period of time.

Magyar said at a press conference held in Budapest that his team aims to meet the European Union’s key requirements within three months. He said Hungary will advance reforms in areas such as anti-corruption, media freedom, and judicial independence to align with the expectations of the European Commission.

He plans to reach a political agreement with the European Commission between May 15 and 20. Magyar believes that the return of EU funds is crucial to stabilizing the Hungarian economy and restoring investors’ confidence.

Earlier on the 20th, the European Commission said that a senior-level delegation held “technical talks” with representatives of the Tisza Party in Budapest from April 17 to 18. Both sides agreed that further efforts are still needed to unfreeze EU funds that have been frozen due to Hungary’s rule-of-law and corruption issues ahead of schedule.

The Tisza Party won an overwhelming victory in the Hungarian parliamentary elections held on April 12, winning 141 of 199 seats in the National Assembly and securing a two-thirds majority. On the 13th, Magyar said that one of the top priorities of the new government’s economic reforms is to unfreeze about 20 billion euros of EU funds.
