Wu Says learned that the U.S. Department of Justice disclosed that British citizen Tyler Robert Buchanan has pleaded guilty. He participated in SMS phishing attacks from September 2021 to April 2023, infiltrated the systems of at least a dozen companies, and stole information. He then bypassed two-factor authentication using methods such as SIM card hijacking to obtain control of the victims’ encrypted accounts and wallets, stealing at least $8 million worth of crypto assets from multiple individual victims in the United States. He has been charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, and faces a maximum of 22 years in federal imprisonment; related cases still have multiple co-defendants awaiting trial.
