Iran 🇮🇷 Fires on Oil Tankers Victimized by Crypto Scams
Recently, Iran announced a Bitcoin toll of $1 per barrel for oil tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz, and scammers immediately impersonated Iranian government officials to send false information to shipowners. On April 18, at least one oil tanker that had paid Bitcoin fees to scammers was intercepted and forced to turn back after being fired upon by Iranian vessels while attempting to pass through the strait.
💡: Under normal operations, the total daily oil passing through the Strait of Hormuz is about 20 million barrels. Due to recent escalations in geopolitical conflicts, data from early April 2026 shows that the actual loading volume through the strait temporarily dropped to an average of 3.8 million barrels per day. However, it still generates significant, non-dollarized sovereign income for Iran.
Iran's move is to regard Bitcoin as a "sovereign-level censorship-resistant tool," attempting to forcibly carve out a financial lifeline outside the U.S. dollar system under its control.
