Just realized a lot of people are confused about updating their SASSA details, especially with the December payments coming up. Let me share what I've learned about this because it's actually pretty different depending on which grant you're getting.

If you're on a permanent grant like old age or disability, you basically have to go in person to a SASSA office—can't do it online. You'll need to fill out a Payment Method Change Form, bring your ID, and most importantly, proof of your new bank account. They're strict about this: the account has to be solely in your name, no joint accounts or anything like that. The verification can take up to 21 working days, so if you want the change to show up next month, you need to submit before the 15th. Miss that deadline and you're waiting another cycle.

But here's the thing—if you're on the SRD grant, it's completely different. You can actually change your account details online through their portal, which is way easier. Just go to the SASSA SRD website, enter your ID number, and they'll send you a secure link via SMS. You enter your new bank info there, and the srd account number change gets verified in a few days to a couple weeks. Same rule though: account has to be in your name only.

One thing that caught me off guard—for the SRD grant, if you're using the cash send option, your phone number has to be RICA-compliant (registered in your name). And watch out for fake websites trying to get your info. Always use the official SASSA link.

Changing your phone number is pretty straightforward for SRD—they have a dedicated contact details page where you enter your ID, new number, and they send you an OTP to verify. But if you hit any issues with the online system, just call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or go to your local office. Sometimes the portal can be glitchy, especially when you're trying to update your number, so don't stress if you need to do it in person.
