Shooting at the WHCA Dinner: What Happened at the Washington Hilton and the Aftermath
On the night of Saturday, April 26, 2026, the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) Dinner—Washington’s most prestigious political-media gathering—descended into chaos within seconds. During the event attended by President Donald Trump, gunshots were heard in the lobby of the Washington Hilton. Secret Service agents intervened immediately, and the suspect was neutralized within minutes.
What Happened?
Around 8:35 p.m., as dinner service began in the ballroom, gunfire rang out from the lobby area. Eyewitnesses and security cameras show an individual running toward a Secret Service checkpoint as agents drew their weapons and responded. President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Cabinet members were quickly evacuated from the hall. Guests took cover under tables.
Metropolitan Police Chief Jeffery Carroll said the attacker rushed the security point in the hotel lobby and was carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives. One agent was struck in his bulletproof vest, taken to the hospital, and is reported to be in good condition. The suspect was not shot; agents tackled him to the ground and handcuffed him.
Who Is the Suspect?
Authorities identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen. Allen is from Torrance, California. He checked into the Washington Hilton on Friday, one day before the event. The FBI said Allen has a background in computer engineering, is a Caltech graduate, and previously worked as a teacher.
Allen’s sister told police that her brother had recently adopted radical rhetoric and mentioned a plan to “do something” to fix what he believed were problems in society. Officials confirmed that in a text sent to his family, Allen explicitly wrote about his intent to target Trump administration officials. A .38-caliber semiautomatic handgun and a 12-gauge shotgun—stored at the home without his family’s knowledge—were recovered.
Timeline of Events 1. Preparation: Allen legally purchased the firearms. He bought the handgun in October 2023 and the shotgun in August 2025. He was a regular at the shooting range and a member of a group called “The Wide Awakes.” 2. Travel: He traveled from Los Angeles to Washington by train. He checked into the Hilton on Friday. 3. Attack: At 8:35 p.m. Saturday, he ran toward the checkpoint in the lobby and opened fire. Secret Service agents fired 3–4 rounds. Allen fired at least one shot. 4. Response: Agents took him to the ground. Trump and senior guests were evacuated. No one else was injured. Official Statements
WHCA President Weijia Jiang said, “Saturday night’s events were harrowing for all of us,” and thanked the Secret Service and law enforcement. “We are relieved that everyone in the room, including the president, the first lady, and the vice president, was unharmed,” she said.
Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said, “The suspect was stopped at first contact. Our layers of protection worked.” Acting U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced Allen will face charges of “using a firearm during a crime of violence” and “assaulting a federal officer with a dangerous weapon.” The initial court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
President Trump posted on Truth Social: “Law enforcement was quick and brave. The attacker was caught. The show should go on.” He later complied with the security evacuation of the building and requested the event be rescheduled within 30 days.
Investigation Continues
The FBI is conducting ballistic analysis at its lab in Quantico. Credit card records and digital traces are under review. Officials believe Allen acted alone. A manifesto and social media posts are part of the case file.
The incident occurred during an event attended by more than 2,000 journalists, politicians, and officials. The WHCA Dinner is held to celebrate the First Amendment and press freedom. This year’s event has brought security protocols for high-profile gatherings back into focus.
Overall Assessment
The attack at the Washington Hilton once again highlighted the risks facing high-profile political events. The Secret Service’s rapid response prevented a greater tragedy. The investigation will clarify Allen’s motives, any connections, and whether there were security gaps.
Security measures in the capital have been increased following the incident. The WHCA emphasized that journalists remained calm and continued reporting, upholding the spirit of the event. The court process will reveal the full scope of the attack.
