I just skimmed through some classic science fiction works and realized that what cyberpunk is still remains a question that many people don’t truly understand. It’s not just a genre—it’s a way of looking at humanity’s entire future as technology becomes overwhelmingly powerful.

What is cyberpunk? Simply put, it’s a branch of science fiction that imagines a world where technology has surpassed society’s ability to control it. Corporations and governments hold absolute power, while ordinary people are split into two groups: those who have access to advanced technology and those left behind. Freedom and privacy? Those have been traded away for a long time.

Many people come to know what cyberpunk is through famous works such as William Gibson’s Neuromancer or the film Blade Runner. Deus Ex is also a great example of how this genre can be portrayed. These works don’t just build a fictional world—they also raise deep questions about humanity and technology.

The features of cyberpunk often include bleak cityscapes lit up by dazzling neon, creating an atmosphere that’s both alluring and unsettling. The main characters are usually hackers or rebels; they use technical skills to push back against structures of power. Technology in cyberpunk isn’t something inherently good—it’s a tool of oppression, from artificial intelligence to cybernetic implants.

What makes cyberpunk so compelling is that it keeps exploring complex ethical issues. When is the use of technology truly justified? Where does human privacy go? What could happen when humans and machines merge? These questions are still highly relevant today.

The future of cyberpunk is sure to continue evolving. The emergence of cryptocurrency and blockchain has given rise to a new subgenre called blockchainpunk, where decentralized technology becomes the main focus. As virtual reality and artificial intelligence continue to advance, what cyberpunk is will gain new layers of meaning. This genre isn’t only literature—it’s also a way for us to reflect on the direction society is heading.
