The developers of "Grand Theft Auto" warn that generative AI could lead to a "mad cow disease" in the gaming industry.
According to a report by Decrypt on December 2, Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, warned that generative AI could pose a serious threat to the gaming industry. In an interview with Virgin Radio UK, Houser stated that as AI models continuously scrape data from the internet, which is increasingly filled with AI-generated content, the gaming industry could fall into a recursive loop that leads to a decline in quality. He likened this phenomenon to “mad cow disease.” Nevertheless, a Google Cloud survey shows that nearly 90% of game studios are already using AI technology in their development processes, including real-time NPC behavior, localization, and testing. Jack Buser, Global Director of Gaming at Google Cloud, warned that studios unable to adapt to this change may struggle to survive.
