Last week, U.S. President Trump pardoned Binance founder Zhao Changpeng (CZ). In response, Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren criticized this as a collusion between the crypto world and political corruption, stating on Twitter (X) that CZ “bribed Trump for a pardon after being sentenced for money laundering,” which led to allegations of defamation from CZ's legal team, who are preparing to file a lawsuit.

Trump grants clemency to CZ, igniting a bipartisan debate in the U.S. Congress.

In 2023, CZ was indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice for violating the Bank Secrecy Act, acknowledging that Binance had not established an effective anti-Money Laundering system. He resigned from his position as CEO under a plea agreement, serving 4 months in prison and paying a fine of 50 million dollars.

As of October 23 this year, Trump announced a pardon for CZ, stating that the Biden administration has over-enforced in the crypto industry and believes that CZ is a victim of politicized prosecution. The news caused an uproar across various sectors.

Democrat Warren angrily criticizes CZ for funding Trump's stablecoin project in exchange for a pardon.

After the news of the pardon was exposed, Democratic Senator Warren immediately posted on X to criticize:

“CZ admitted to Money Laundering and was then sentenced to prison, but he funded Trump's stablecoin project and lobbied for a pardon in return. If Congress does not put a stop to this kind of corruption, it is complicit.”

However, this post was immediately corrected by the platform community with a note:

“CZ admits to violations of the Bank Secrecy Act, but not to money laundering.”

CZ's lawyer strikes back, preparing to sue Warren for defamation.

After this, CZ's lawyer Teresa Goody Guillen stated that Warren's claims are seriously false, and she is preparing a formal letter requesting Warren to retract the post and the erroneous statements. If the other party does not retract, CZ will file a defamation lawsuit.

She stated in a draft letter:

“CZ will not remain silent while a senator abuses their power and publicly makes false statements that harm reputation. We demand that Warren immediately retracts on X and in Congress.”

Gillin also pointed out that the U.S. Speech or Debate Clause (Speech or Debate Clause) only protects statements made within Congress and does not cover social media or press releases, so Warren's posts on X lack immunity.

The image shows Guillen's related post defending CZ on Twitter (X). The Democrats insist on their stance and push a resolution to condemn Trump for the pardon.

Warren, along with Democratic Congressman Adam Schiff, who also criticizes Trump, introduced a resolution condemning Trump's pardon actions and calling on Congress to use its power to stop such corruption. Before preparing to present the resolution in the Senate on 10/28, she reiterated in an interview with foreign media:

“CZ admits to illegal activities; I am merely pointing out the fact that he acknowledged.”

Regarding CZ's threat of legal action, Warren's office has not yet responded, and how the situation will develop remains to be seen.
