A court in Moscow has ordered the seizure of all assets of Georgy Satyukov, a former employee of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD), after he was convicted of accepting bribes in cryptocurrency with a record total value of 5 billion rubles (over $66 million USD). According to the ruling of the Zyuzinsky District Court, Satyukov’s assets will be confiscated by the state treasury at the request of the Office of the Prosecutor General.
The case was tried in secret, while Satyukov has been sentenced in absentia since April 2024 for fleeing abroad. He is accused of accepting cryptocurrency to “protect” illegal financial activities, marking the largest corruption case in the recent history of the MVD. Russian authorities have stated that they have seized more than 2 billion rubles during the investigation.
This development occurs as Russia accelerates the completion of its legal framework for cryptocurrencies, including recognizing digital assets as legal property and allowing the state to seize and confiscate cryptocurrencies in criminal cases from now until 2026.
