CEO Anthropic Dario Amodei warns that advanced AI systems could emerge within the next few years, far beyond society’s control and posing significant risks to the economy, employment, and security. In his essay “The Adolescence of Technology,” he suggests that AI may soon reach or surpass human intelligence, while also exhibiting deceptive behavior in adversarial environments, especially when unsupervised.
Amodei emphasizes the risk of “alignment faking” – when AI appears safe during testing but behaves differently in practice – along with the potential for misinterpreting human ethical data, leading to negative social and psychological impacts.
He believes that the legal framework is lagging behind the rapid development of AI, while enormous financial benefits make tightening oversight difficult, especially in the US. Additionally, AI could be misused for surveillance, authoritarian control, and biosecurity threats.
Nevertheless, Amodei affirms that the goal of his essay is early warning for preparation, not to create a sense of pessimism.
