Polymarket is a blockchain-based prediction market platform that allows users to trade on the outcomes of real-world events. The prices reflect the market’s forecast of the probability of those events occurring. Below is a complete guide from registration, funding, to placing actual orders.

Polymarket Preparation and Registration

Due to regulations and regional restrictions, users in Taiwan can usually only browse market information but cannot trade directly on Polymarket. To participate, you typically need to use a VPN to change your IP address to a region without restrictions, such as nearby South Korea.

After visiting the official website, there are two registration options:

Connect with Google / Email account: Suitable for Web2 users. The system will automatically generate a hosted wallet for you.

Connect with a Web3 wallet: After connecting your wallet, the system will automatically create an account on Polymarket without requiring additional personal information.

Once registered with a wallet, an address will be generated. Click the “Deposit” button on the left side of your account to see four funding options:

Link Wallet: No amount limit, supports up to 20 cryptocurrencies. Transfer the corresponding tokens on the respective blockchain.

Credit Card: Supports over 20 fiat currencies. The USD transfer limit per transaction is $100,000.

Link Exchange: Currently supports Coinbase; Binance and Kraken will be available soon.

Connect PayPal Account: Via MoonPay.

Polymarket Price Mechanism

Let’s take the recent hot topic “Will the US acquire parts of Greenland in 2026?” as an example:

• The price for “Yes” is $24: indicating the market’s current estimate that there is a 24% chance the US will successfully acquire Greenland in 2026.

• The price for “No” is $77: indicating a 77% chance the US will not succeed in acquiring Greenland in 2026.

In theory, the sum of “Yes” and “No” prices should equal $100. The total of $101 shown here is due to bid-ask spreads and the order book matching mechanism. The current displayed price is the “Ask Price” — if you want to buy immediately, you need to pay a slightly higher premium to liquidity providers. This extra $1 acts as a transaction friction cost.

It’s recommended to start with limit orders because market orders will execute at the current higher “ask price,” which can be costly, especially for large purchases, and may cause slippage. Limit orders allow for better entry prices and lower holding costs.

Note: Currently, Polymarket charges 0% fee on most political, news, and current events prediction markets. The only exception is “15-minute Crypto Markets,” which involves high-frequency trading and charges Taker Fees on market orders, while providing rebates for limit orders.

Suppose you believe the US will acquire Greenland and decide to buy “Yes”:

• Cost: $24 per share.

• Potential Return: If the event occurs (result is Yes), each share can be redeemed for $100.

• Profit Calculation: For one share, (100 – 24) = $76 profit. Return on investment: 76/24 × 100% ≈ 316%.

• Risk: If the event does not happen (result is No), your contract value drops to zero, and you lose your $24 principal.

Polymarket Selling and Profit Taking

On Polymarket, “Selling” mainly refers to exchanging your purchased prediction contracts back into stablecoins. This usually happens in two scenarios: wanting to lock in profits before the event ends or cutting losses if your prediction was wrong.

This mechanism allows you to cash out without waiting for the event to conclude. When probabilities change, you can lock in gains. For example, if you bought “Yes” at $10 and later the price rises to $21, you can sell immediately to realize a 110% return.

Similarly, if the situation reverses and the price starts falling, you can choose to sell at a loss to avoid losing all your remaining funds.
