Global instability drives the adoption of decentralized messaging and social media applications

Interest in decentralized messaging and social media applications based on blockchain is surging amid social unrest and communication disruptions in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. According to Exploding Topics, searches for decentralized social media have increased by 145% over the past five years. Notably, the peer-to-peer messaging app Bitchat saw a spike in downloads during protests in Madagascar, Uganda, Nepal, Indonesia, and Iran.

Shane Mac believes users are gradually trusting more open protocols compared to centralized platforms, especially as privacy becomes a priority. Meanwhile, WhatsApp has been restricted in Russia, forcing users to use VPNs.

Although the blockchain messaging market is expected to grow rapidly, centralized platforms will continue to coexist, as users currently spend an average of 6.75 platforms per month.
