Gate News report, March 31, according to The Wall Street Journal, U.S. government officials said that U.S. President Trump has told his staff that even if the Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed, he is willing to end the United States’ military action against Iran. This move could extend Tehran’s firm control over the waterway and leave the re-opening of the strait—an intricate operation—to be dealt with later. In recent days, Trump and his aides assessed that the task of clearing this critical choke point would make the conflict go beyond his set 4-to-6-week timeline. Trump has decided that the United States should accomplish the main goal of weakening Iran’s naval and missile stockpiles, gradually bring the current fighting to an end, and apply pressure on Iran through diplomatic channels, demanding the restoration of free trade. Officials said that if diplomatic efforts fail, Washington would pressure its allies in Europe and the Gulf region to take the lead in re-opening the strait. They said Trump could also choose a military option, but that is not his current priority.
