Ge Qi, a professor at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications and the founder of Metaverse in Gongti, gave a speech on the sub-forum of “AI Empowering Digital Culture” with the theme of “Metaverse Construction in the AI Era”.
Ge Qi introduced that there are currently more than 100 Metaverse large space LBE projects nationwide based on original IP investment and operation, among which VR+ classic IP renewal + local WiFi streaming has become the main model. Industry data analysis shows that by 2029, the overall scale of China’s large space immersive industry is expected to exceed 250 billion yuan, becoming a landmark phenomenon-level industry of new quality productivity.

Ge Qi pointed out that three major trends are overturning the era of mobile internet in the AI era:
Firstly, the super asymmetry and the breakthrough in quantum chip computing power led to a collective collapse of the cryptocurrency market. On December 9, 2024, Bitcoin dropped from $100,000 to $94,100, causing a total of 237,000 people to be liquidated within 24 hours.
Secondly, there is super evolution. On December 10th, OpenAI announced the official opening of Sora, an AI video generation model, to users. The system can generate realistic videos based on text prompts. Sora has caused a shock in the global technology industry, especially in the field of video generation. With its extremely high generation quality, fast response time, and low-cost generation methods, Sora has put tremendous pressure on some traditional video companies.
Third, it is super versatile, building a diverse and multi-level industrial ecosystem worldwide, which includes a diversified combination of general large-scale models, industry-specific models, and professional models. In this ecosystem, multiple participants are jointly driving the development of the industry. There is no evidence that a single large-scale model can dominate the market, nor is there any evidence that super applications based on these large-scale models will develop into monopolistic markets.
Ge Qi further pointed out that AI empowers the Internet 3.0 to advance towards the high ground of the Metaverse, and the Metaverse is expected to become the main form of the new generation of immersive Internet 3.0.
Technological innovation enables the construction of the Metaverse industry
Ge Qi introduced that there are three major pain points in the construction of the Metaverse industry: firstly, the physical space capacity is limited, and the traffic cannot leap to social interaction, making it impossible to achieve real-time data interaction and integration in a true sense; secondly, the research and development costs of system solutions are high, the operation cycle is long, the performance of the Wifi streaming solution system is poor, and the concurrency quantity is low, making it impossible to achieve multiple sessions; thirdly, original IP is scarce, XR devices do not support eSIM, and 3D digital assets cannot be broadcast and operated across hardware, platforms, and physical spaces.
Regarding the above issues, Ge Qi put forward three points of thinking and countermeasures:
5G-A and millimeter wave: Wifi is no longer able to meet the customer experience needs of the Metaverse. 5G-A and millimeter wave, the next generation 5G network, have higher traffic density, becoming the standard configuration for the Metaverse. The peak rate of 5G-A in the current network can reach 6.1Gbps, and the average rate reaches 3.4Gbps, which can empower the communication and rendering applications of the Metaverse in all scenarios, improving user experience.
XR multi-form intelligent hardware and eSIM: With the density of IoT and smartphone traffic reaching the ceiling, multi-form XR terminals have become the new generation of 5G network killer hardware applications. eSIM empowers XR devices, enabling them with revolutionary functions to support the application of multi-form intelligent hardware in the Metaverse, such as smartwatches, smartphones, XR devices, etc.
Hybrid AI: The private MaaS (Metaverse as a Service) platform and the next-generation 5G computing network jointly undertake core functions such as real-time rendering of the Metaverse, digital assets, and identity authentication. Through the collaborative efforts of system platforms, data domains, and business platforms, it provides technical support for the Metaverse and realizes multi-scene applications such as digital sports events, digital consumption, and membership services.
Looking ahead, Ge Qi said that we are developing towards a digital new height, from digitalization to intelligence. We hope that AIGC can make Metaverse the main form of Internet 3.0, bring users more rich, real and personalized experience, and promote the innovative development of digital economy and cultural industry.
