Ge Qi, a professor at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications and the founder of the Workers’ Sports Metaverse, delivered a speech on the theme of “Metaverse Construction in the AI Era” at the sub-forum of “AI Empowering Digital Culture”. Ge Qi pointed out that AI-empowered Internet 3.0 is heading towards the highland of the metaverse, and the metaverse is expected to become the main form of the new generation of immersive Internet 3.0.

Industry data analysis shows that by 2029, the overall scale of China’s large-scale immersive industry is expected to exceed 250 billion yuan, becoming a landmark phenomenon of new productive forces.

The second is super evolution. On December 10th, OpenAI officially announced the opening of the artificial intelligence AI video generation model Sora to users. The system can generate lifelike videos based on text prompts. Sora has caused a stir in the global technology industry, especially in the field of video generation. With its extremely high generation quality, fast response time, and low-cost generation method, Sora has once put tremendous pressure on some traditional video companies.
Third, it is super versatile. A diversified and multi-level industrial ecosystem is being built worldwide, which includes a diverse combination of general large models, industry large models, and professional large models. In this ecosystem, multiple participants are jointly promoting the development of the industry. There is no evidence that a single large model can dominate the market, and there is also no evidence that super applications based on these large models will develop into monopolistic markets.
Ge Qi further pointed out that AI empowers the Internet 3.0 to advance towards the heights of the metaverse, which is expected to become the main form of the new generation of immersive Internet 3.0.
Technological innovation enables the construction of the metaverse industry
Ge Qi introduced that there are three major pain points in the construction of the metaverse industry: first, the physical space capacity is limited, the flow cannot leap to social interaction, and it is impossible to achieve true numerical linkage and integration; second, the research and development construction cost of the system solution is high, the operation cycle is long, the performance of the Wifi streaming solution system is poor, and the concurrency is low, which cannot realize multiple sessions; third, original IP is scarce, XR devices do not support eSIM, and 3D digital assets cannot be broadcast and operated across hardware, platforms, and physical spaces.
Regarding the above issues, Ge Qi put forward three points of thinking and coping measures:
5G-A and millimeter wave: Wifi can no longer meet the customer experience requirements of the Metaverse. 5G-A and millimeter wave, the new generation 5G network, have a higher traffic density, becoming the standard configuration for the Metaverse. The peak rate of 5G-A in the current network test can reach 6.1Gbps, and the average rate is 3.4Gbps, which can empower the Metaverse in all-scenario communication and rendering applications, improving user experience.
XR Multi-form Smart Hardware and eSIM: With the density of IoT and smartphone traffic reaching the ceiling, multi-form XR terminals have become the killer hardware application of the new generation 5G network. eSIM empowers XR devices, enabling them to have revolutionary functions and support the application of multi-form smart hardware in the metaverse, such as smartwatches, smartphones, XR devices, etc.
Hybrid AI: The private MaaS (Metaverse as a Service) platform and the next generation 5G algorithmic network jointly undertake core functions such as real-time rendering of the metaverse, digital assets, and identity authentication. Through the collaborative efforts of system platforms, data domains, business platforms, etc., it provides technical support for the metaverse and realizes multi-scenario applications such as digital events, digital consumption, and member services.
Looking to the future, Ge Qi said that we are developing towards a digital new highland, from digitization to intelligence. I hope AIGC can make the metaverse the main form of Internet 3.0, bringing users a richer, more real, and personalized experience, and promoting the innovative development of the digital economy and cultural industry.
