According to a report released by Mempool Research on February 4th, the widespread adoption of inscription may result in an average block size of up to 4 MB per block on the BTC network, far exceeding the current average level. A report states that the average Block size of BTC (i.e., the amount of data included in each Block published to the network’s public ledger) is currently slightly over 1.5 MB. However, if inscription is more widely adopted, the Block size of BTC may increase significantly. Block size is one of the major constraints on the scalability of the BTC network. In contrast, according to data from the Solana Foundation, Solana theoretically can store up to 128 MB per Block. The report states that after the Taproot upgrade in 2021, some BTC Blocks stored as much as 2.4 MB of data and added, “We have predicted a series of potential growth scenarios for the BTC blockchain, from the dynamics before the inscription recovery (resulting in slowed growth) to widespread adoption of inscription (potentially driving growth up to 4MB per Block).”
