Trump reaches a prisoner exchange protocol with Russia, BTC-e's former operator Vinnik is released and returned to Russia

ChainCatcher message, according to The Block, US President Trump reached a prisoner exchange protocol with Russia, exchanging the former operator of BTC-e exchange Alexander Vinnik with American teacher Marc Fogel, who was arrested in Russia. Vinnik pleaded guilty to money laundering conspiracy in May 2024 in the San Francisco federal court. According to the US Department of Justice, during its operation, BTC-e assisted in laundering over $4 billion in criminal proceeds and was involved in the laundering of stolen funds from Mt. Gox. Vinnik was arrested in Greece in 2017, sentenced to 5 years in prison by a French court in 2020, and extradited to the United States in 2022.
