OpenAI and Instacart have launched a brand new grocery shopping feature in ChatGPT, allowing users to plan meals, create shopping lists, and complete purchases directly within the chat interface. This is an expansion of their existing partnership, which previously integrated AI search into Instacart’s app. With former Instacart CEO and OpenAI board member Fidji Simo appointed as OpenAI’s Chief Executive of Applications, the collaboration between the two companies has been further strengthened. This move aligns with OpenAI’s focus on “smart commerce,” leveraging AI to facilitate shopping, as demonstrated by recent developer integrations with companies like Target and Expedia. Although OpenAI is currently operating at a loss, it will collect a small fee from sales generated through ChatGPT, providing a potential new source of revenue.
