Date Set for Trump’s Supreme Court Clash with Fed Governor Cook
The Federal Reserve governor has been embroiled in a bitter feud with the Trump administration since August.
Supreme Court Sets Date for Trump vs. Fed Gov. Lisa Cook
A Wednesday Supreme Court update revealed that the highest court in the land will hear oral arguments from U.S. President Donald Trump and Federal Reserve Board Governor Lisa Cook on Jan. 21, 2026, after an August letter from the president firing Cook, triggered an unprecedented legal battle that could determine the nature of Fed independence, once the Supreme Court gives its ruling.

The scandal dates back to 2021, when Cook allegedly listed two different properties as her “primary residence” on a couple of loan applications that were just weeks apart. She says the discrepancy was an innocent mistake, but the Trump administration is calling it mortgage fraud, and the president insists Cook’s actions are grounds for dismissal. A district judge ruled in the governor’s favor, but the president took it before the Supreme Court. And now, legal pundits are bracing for a landmark showdown in January.
“If a president can remove a governor or any other official from the Fed based on an accusation, that’s a very serious threat to independence,” said former Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester in a September interview. “Because that can happen to anyone then, who might have policy views that aren’t aligned with the president’s.” Cook’s lawyers echoed Mester’s concerns and said the president will “eviscerate the independence of the Federal Reserve Board” if he is successful in removing the governor.
