The deadlock over redistricting ends as Texas Democratic lawmakers return after "walking out."
On August 18, Jin10 reported that with the second round of special legislative sessions convening, Democratic lawmakers from Texas have returned to the state. They had previously left Texas for two weeks to block a vote on a new congressional district map supported by Trump, which could potentially give the Republican Party up to five additional seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. Democrats have stated that they have not given up this fight, and if the map ultimately passes in the Republican-controlled state House and Senate and is signed into law by the governor, they will resort to legal challenges. During the first special session, their departure had left the House without a quorum, causing legislative work to stall. The leader of the Texas House Democrats, Gene Wu, stated, “Our return is to establish the necessary legal record to defeat this proposal.”
