According to the latest report from The Block, the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has reached an agreement to acquire the prediction market startup The Clearing Company, continuing to deepen its layout in the field of event-based trading, as an important part of its overall strategy to promote the everything exchange.

Coinbase deepens its prediction market layout

At the time this acquisition was announced, Coinbase had just officially launched the prediction market feature on its platform last week, allowing users to trade on real-world events such as election results, macroeconomic data, and sports events within the same interface, further expanding its product line: extending from Crypto Assets, derivatives, and stocks to more interactive event-based markets.

According to Coinbase, the exchange still needs to meet general delivery conditions, and it is expected to be completed in January next year. A Coinbase spokesperson stated that the transaction amount does not reach the significant threshold that must be disclosed, so the specific amount is not announced to the public, and it is confirmed that the consideration for this acquisition is a mix of cash and Coinbase stock. After the transaction is completed, almost the entire team of The Clearing Company will join Coinbase to help expand its prediction market product scale.

Coinbase also revealed that its prediction market currently operates through regulated exchange channels and initially introduced Kalshi as a source of liquidity. In the future, it will gradually expand the types of markets and platforms supported, continuously strengthening related services.

What is The Clearing Company?

The Clearing Company was founded this year by Toni Gemayel. Gemayel previously worked at the well-known prediction market platforms Polymarket and Kalshi, holding growth-related positions. The company completed a $15 million seed funding round in August this year, with investors including Coinbase Ventures, aiming to build an “on-chain, compliant, regulated” prediction market infrastructure to enable event-based trading to operate more efficiently on the blockchain.

Gemayel stated that joining Coinbase will allow the team's products and experience to reach a broader user base. He pointed out that for the prediction market to realize its maximum value, the key lies in the combination of market structure and traffic distribution, and Coinbase's global user base is an important condition for driving the scaling of such markets.

It is worth mentioning that this acquisition has also become the tenth merger announced by Coinbase in 2025, indicating that the company is actively accelerating the expansion of product boundaries and new financial application scenarios through external acquisitions. Against the backdrop of cryptocurrency exchanges competing to find growth momentum beyond spot trading, the prediction market is gradually becoming the next battleground.
