PANews January 31 News, according to Global Times, sources familiar with the matter revealed that NVIDIA originally planned to invest up to $100 billion (approximately 696.456 billion RMB) in OpenAI for training and operating the latest artificial intelligence models. However, due to internal doubts within the company, this highly anticipated deal is currently on hold.
In September last year, NVIDIA and OpenAI announced their collaboration at NVIDIA’s headquarters in Santa Clara, California. At that time, both parties signed a memorandum of understanding, with NVIDIA committing to provide at least 10GW of computing power for OpenAI and investing up to $100 billion to help cover related costs. OpenAI agreed to rent NVIDIA chips. At that time, OpenAI expected the negotiations to be finalized quickly, but so far, discussions remain in the early stages. Currently, both sides are reevaluating the cooperation prospects, and the latest plan may shift toward dollar equity investments in OpenAI’s current funding round.
Sources further revealed that NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang has privately emphasized in recent months that the initial $100 billion agreement is not binding and is far from finalization. He also criticized OpenAI for lacking sufficient discipline in commercial advancement and expressed concerns about facing strong competition from rivals like Anthropic.
In response, an OpenAI spokesperson stated, “The details of the collaboration are still being worked out. NVIDIA’s technology has supported our breakthroughs from the beginning and continues to drive our current systems. It will remain a core component as we scale in the future.”
