Israel intensifies its military operations against Hezbollah deposits in Lebanon
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have resumed large-scale military operations against what they describe as “terrorist infrastructure” linked to Hezbollah in Lebanese territory. These attacks focus on weapons depots and rocket launch systems, marking a new phase of tensions following the November 2024 ceasefire agreement.
Background: Persistent Tensions Despite the Ceasefire
Since the ceasefire was signed several months ago, Israel has carried out dozens of bombings against Lebanese positions, claiming they respond to violations of the pact by Hezbollah. Israeli authorities argue that the presence of arsenals in border areas directly violates the terms agreed upon by both countries.
The Israeli government maintains that its military operations remain defensive and proportional, justified by the need to eliminate threats before they can materialize. However, this stance has caused significant friction, as the Israeli army continues to maintain five military posts in Lebanese territory, a situation Beirut officials describe as an occupation that contradicts the commitments of the agreement.
Pressure on the Second Phase of Disarmament
The most recent military operations occur amid increasing international pressure to accelerate the complete disarmament of the Shiite group. Lebanese authorities announced the completion of the first phase in border areas, but Israel has warned it will intensify its actions if the dismantling of infrastructure does not proceed at the required pace.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun publicly called for the total withdrawal of Israeli forces and urged the international community to pressure Israel to ensure compliance with its commitments. The humanitarian situation is worsening, with over 80,000 Lebanese displaced due to escalating violence in the region.
New Actions in Gaza Strip
Meanwhile, the IDF reported additional military operations in northern Gaza. The army identified armed elements allegedly emerging from tunnels and taking refuge among ruins near Israeli positions, close to the Yellow Line.
Under the command of the Northern Brigade Combat Team attached to Division 98, Israeli forces carried out an airstrike on the building where the armed individuals had taken shelter, reporting the neutralization of at least two of them. The army believes others were also killed, while they continue to search the area for potential remaining threats.
Ongoing Escalation and Its Implications
Israel classifies these incidents as blatant violations of the ceasefire agreement and has expressed its determination to maintain active military operations to prevent new attacks against its forces or civilians. Actions continue to focus on destroying underground infrastructure, in line with Israel’s interpretation of the current terms of the agreement.
The persistence of these military operations reflects the fragility of the peace achieved and suggests that the implementation of the ceasefire terms remains a point of dispute between the involved parties.
