So I just found out you can actually give your dog watermelon in the summer and honestly I've been doing it all wrong. Apparently it's totally safe as long as you do it right, which is the key part I missed.
First things first - if you're wondering can a dog have watermelon, the answer is yes, but there's a whole list of stuff to remove first. Seeds and rind are absolute no-nos because they can cause blockages and choking. I learned that the hard way by almost giving my pup a whole slice. The rule is cut it into small bite-sized pieces, no seeds, no rind, and honestly just start with a few pieces to see how they react.
What's cool is that watermelon is like 92% water so it's perfect for keeping dogs hydrated during hot months. Plus it's got vitamins A, B6, and C packed in there, which helps with their immune system and all that. Low calories too so you don't have to worry as much about them gaining weight.
The thing is don't go overboard with it. If your dog eats too much watermelon at once, all that sudden water and fiber can mess with their stomach - basically they'll get diarrhea or throw up. So treat it as an occasional thing, not something they eat every day. Also make sure it's fresh and not moldy because that can actually make them sick.
You can do it frozen if they need cooling down, or just raw chunks, whatever works. But honestly just check with your vet first before introducing any new food. That's what I should've done instead of just guessing.
